This morning "Donna" was running through my head for some reason, so I decided to Google to find out who wrote it, and stumbled upon your site, and this page from a year ago. I would like to add that Gene was always my favorite during my young-to-mid teen years. To this day, one of my 'all-time' songs is "True Love Never Runs Smooth."

Gene Pitney wrote, 'Only love can break a heart, only love can mend it again'.

I wrote 'we curse those who broke our hearts till we realise they were the ones who taught us we had one in the first place'.

Teachers are everywhere... familiar strangers on records, people at bus stops, a piece of an advertisement seen in a split second and remembered only preconsciously till its triggered back out in some profound realisation that isn't known till its expressed.

Wow this is a sad day for me. I grew up on Gene Pitney. What a beatiful piece you have written Donna. I went away to Crete on 4th so i didn't get the news until i read it here. I know what you mean about Gene Pitney. He was the sort of wholesome boy next door image. Yes a sad day for many many people. XPX

Fantastic Don,.... oh thankyou, thankyou for that pic of the cover.
In my teens I moved 'home' about 30 times in 3 years and eventually some homelessness too (inevitable) so I lost my precious album so long ago but still I sing the songs from it, especially Half Heaven, Half Heartache and Donna. You'll see on the back of that album, the song Donna Means Heartbreak.

Goodness, I'd love to get a copy of that album again.

Of course it was never mine in the first place. I ferreted it off from my parent's collection. I think I recall someone trying to take it back from me and that for a while I was given just the cover. But when I was about ten-twelve or so, I got the record back with the cover and played it a lot.

The thing that's most important is we can lose a record, even a memory, but its much harder to lose what those memories made us.
