If your doc sends blood off for testing under NHS then sure, should be covered. The doc would have to envision the POTENTIAL for food allergies to be having some impact on the gut/brain relationship... so I wouldn't say 'causing autism' but that you'd like to check if there's anything you can do to maximise info processing via minimising this any untreated food allergy relationship.

interestingly other food allergies can cause chronically high histamine which lowers methylation meaning impaired salicylate detox... a recent IgE blood test showed allergy to both soy and peanuts (legumes) hadn't taken them seriously as seemed little difference being off them, then realised I was on pea and beans in between... so figure once off the legumes I might find immunity improves and also methylation... so an indirect route to lowering the detox issues re salicylate toxicity... so if she hasn't had an IgE test for inherited allergies could be worth a look re impact on histamine-methylation path. all the best.

Hi Donna
Thanks for prompt reply . Our daughter had an instant high from eating some pine nuts in some homemade pesto yesterday. Terrible comedown that turned a usually well behaved sweet child into a badly behaved uncontrollable child. It was a very severe reaction and distressing . Do you find reactions to some salicylates are much worse than others. Also we find reactions to certain foods can cause irritated bladder .
SCD diet does hope to reduce reactions salicylates but this hasn't been the case with our daughter.
          Kind Regards Su

once my salicylate levels are low I can usually cope with a few high ones once a week max (like if eating out).... also depends on my general immunity... if that's supressed low salicylate has to be tougher, but general I am off all the stuff in the 18 times the high level group: yeast extracts, honey, almonds, stone fruits, berries, grapes, concentrated fruit juices, artificial colorings. The rest I am able to juggle. But when I was really immune suppressed it was much tougher. By having a once a month eat out I can know which day I'm going to have higher salicylate levels so I don't have 3 days of loading to tackle, just the one. Generally works. I'm also GF/CF and no sugar so even tougher. Plus I'm low soy. Seems all came together once I understood the IgA deficiencies implications re digestion, metabolism, detox, etc. No point whingeing. I have so much more as a result to tackling the health issues.

Hi Donna
You have been an inspiration and a true guide since my own daughter was diagnosed 5 years ago . She has so many issues that you have battled . She can't tolerat any grains yeast dairy or foods high in salicylates. She has been strict scd for one year and despite huge improvements in language and cognition we cant really introduce much atall. Did you find things did improve a little as you grew older.? It would be so nice for our daughter to one day be included in the social aspect of food one that is almost impossible on the current strict protocol.
Also despite my efforts to keep the house free of toxins the odd item slips by teenage children in house and you can guarantee any fluoride toothpaste will be found by my daughter . She seems to be able to find it by smell.
  Best Wishes Sue

Hi Donna! I was given the link to your blog as I'm a keen advocate for sickness prevention, and after I'd posted an article about toothpaste and fluoride on my FB site. I learned about the toxicity of fluoride some years ago and was absolutely appalled and changed to using Neways non-toxic products. That was also when I started reading the labels on the packets that normally I would just throw away! The packets for the toothpaste read to get in touch with a poisons bureau if your child swallows it! Charming! I also use a range of therapeutic oils that are great for children with ADHD & detoxifying the body and I'd be happy to share some info with you if you like. Kind regards, Jeanette Tucker

one of the problems in understanding salicylate intolerance is that it is not an allergy... one can ALSO be allergic to salicylate. As such salicylate reaction often takes 3 days of progressive high loading before the system collapses under that you you show the physical, sensory, neuro challenges and their behavioural and communication fallout, so docs don't get that, they are just thinking along allergy lines. Salicylate intolerance takes two forms, either one has low levels of phenotransferase and can't metabolise salicylates and phenols properly or is a poor detoxer so these natural plant toxins build quicker and are slower to dissipate for those with salicylate intolerance than those who are good detoxers. Apparently around 60% of people with autism are likely to be salicylate intolerant. But that also means that around 40% are not.
