Donna Williams, Autism As A Fruit Salad, Dallas 18th Nov 2008
Am I giving a lecture in Dallas this November? YES.After being approached by a fellow spectrumite, Fleur Wiorkowski, I agreed to come speak in Dallas.
Being on the spectrum, Fleur approached the current president of the Dallas chapter of the ASA for assistance in organising a venue and hosting the event and put her own money forward for the domestic flight to get me from another part of my US tour to Dallas and onto my next stop.
At that point the president of the Dallas chapter of the ASA quit and a new president took over.
In the chaos, it was unclear for some time who was going to continue as organiser as both the ex-president and the new president wanted to continue the event! It was clear I couldn’t speak at both events as one was offering a free event, the other a charged event. I had to choose which to speak for so asked a third party what was the protocol re making that choice.
After advice from one of my own state autism organisations, I chose to speak for the Autism Society of America, regardless of who was in charge and the ASA, in conjunction now with Autism Society of Dallas (ASD), are glad to move forward with the event. For those interested, here’s the details. Hope to see you there.
