Navigating Involuntary and Managing Voluntary Behaviours on the Autism Spectrum
‘Autism’ is one word but underlying autistic development and behaviour can be a ‘fruit salad’ of conditions. These conditions will often result in a range of voluntary and involuntary behaviors but how can you tell them apart and what are the low cost/no cost strategies for each?
I made a video over at Autism Hangout which is from a presentation given to an LA audience in 2010 when I was unable to fly there to give the presentation in person.
From this presentation you may:
* Know which behaviors:
– may respond best to environmental changes.
– largely advocacy and understanding
– can be channeled into more constructive directions
– may be best diverted
– can be safely challenged
* Be better able to tell involuntary from voluntary behaviours including:
– involuntary tics from voluntary self stimulatory behaviours (stims)
– involuntary behaviours of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder from an Obsessive Interest as part of Obsesssive Compulsive Personality Disorder
– personality and environmental issues from sensory perceptual disorders
* Form stronger social and emotional bonds based on understanding voluntary from involuntary behaviours.
* Better head off and manage meltdowns.
* Help improve advocacy.
I hope you enjoy the presentation.
Warmly,
