The Call by Donna Williams

The Call by Donna Williams

The movement and travel and physicality of sound was experienced as textures and movement, and in the painting the characters simply give the context…. I love sound, as a muso, singer, but equally spent my first 10 years 90% meaning deaf… so sound was purely patterns, movement, variations… later it had pragmatic purpose, associated meanings… but I’m blessed to have known both planets and this pic captures that journey for me.

Donna Williams, BA Hons, Dip Ed.
Author, artist, singer-songwriter, screenwriter.
Autism consultant and public speaker.

Let’s remember this and not judge intelligence based on verbal skills.

and had I not been put on supplements and started eating meals and if people hadn’t started using telegraphic speech with gestural signing and representational objects, and left a typewriter and a record player and pile of 78s, and an entire mirrored wall to hang out with and chatter to, and if I hadn’t been put on sedation to reduce the mood/anxiety/compulsive disorder issues… all done at age 9-11 then I’d still be functionally non verbal

By the way, we met twice in the 90ies. I was doing a post doc with Douglas Biklin and you were the key note speaker at two fc conferences in Syracuse. We spoke briefly each time. For the second conference, I brought several of my Ashland University (Ohio) undergraduate students. I prepped them by saying you had little interaction with the audience, preferred the audience not to clap, and referred to your notes while speaking. You also needed someone to get you back on track when you lost your concentration, but most importantly, you were brilliant. I looked for you as the time came close for the keynote address. Couldn’t find you, but this confident woman was up near the podium, interacting, and wearing a stylish haircut. I was astonished when she was introduced as Donna Williams. During the speech, you said you had changed several things in your life. You were on medications for anxiety and compulsion (hope I remember that right), you were attending to allergies, you had decided to understand “normal” people, etc. You said we could clap, it didn’t mean much to you, but you understood the meaning. I hadn’t recognized you! I still smile when I tell that story.

So many people believe autism is a life sentence of misery for all concerned. Thank you for sharing so much about your life and being willing to live it to the fullest.
